Hypodontia and its influence on the quality of life

Relevance of the problem and the aim of the work: hypodontia, tooth agenesis - is the developmental absence of one or more, primary or secondary teeth exluding third molar teeth. Teeth agenesis is more common where there is a family member with history of hypodontia. The reported prevalence of hypodontia shows wide variation between different populations, prevalence varying from 2.6 % to 15 %. Hypodontia can occur as an isolated condition (non-syndromic hypodontia) or be associated with a syndrome (syndromic hypodontia). The location of missing permanent teeth most common in maxillary lateral incisors, mandibular second premolars, maxillary second premolars, maxillary first premolar and the mandibular second premolar. In conclusion, hypodontia appears to have a huge impact on lower oral health related quality of life and less masticatory efficiency in patients. The purpose of this study is to investigate hypodontia aetiology and evaluate hypodontia influence on oral health related quality of life and self esteem of patients. Material and the methods: the research has been conducted using LSMU subscripted electronic databases: Pubmed, Science Direct, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and Lithuanian virtual library database. Searched for studies between years 2012 and 2017, which were researching and/or comparing microorganism and plaque adhesion to the removable denture base surface. 15 scientific studies meeting the criteria were found and analyzed. Results: analyzed hypodontia influenceon the quality of life, find out the causes of the disease, different treatment methods. It is clear that hypodontia causing adverse effects to human socialization, psychological disability, social disability, creates a restriction or functional limitation. Conclusions: the aetiology of hypodontia is unknown, it may occur due to genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors. Tooth agenesis has a significant psychosocial impact on the patients, on lower oral health related quality of life, functional disability. However, hypodontia has been reported to be associated with other dental anomalities, including microdontia, transpositions, taurodontism. Hypodontia can also be related with delayed tooth formation. There are several treatment options, this can vary from no treatment, orthodontic treatment, or maintaining or redistributing tooth space in preparation for prosthetic replacement. Orthodontic treatment clearly helps improve the oral health, on the other hand it had negative impact on quality of life during and after the treatment.
