By means of immunohistochemical investigation, we have determined that in the sigmoid colon of diverticular disease patients there is a significant decrease in CGRP-IR nerve fibres (p<0,001). On the contrary, in diverticular disease patients, we found an increase in CGRP receptor, CRLR, expression within the enteric plexuses (p<0,01). These differences were most pronounced within the myenteric neural plexus, where CGRP was shown to have an intricate relationship with the nitriergic system and is known to be involved in colonic motor activity
