The growth and meat quality analysis of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fed with extruded feed and additionally dehydrated fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae

The final thesis was accomplished in 2016-2017, LSMU VA Animal Husbandry Technology Faculty. The meat quality tests performed LSMU Academy of Veterinary Animal Meat Characteristics and quality assessment laboratory, using the devices, the company Minolta color meter ,,400 Chroma meter\", pH-meter INOLAB3, fatty acids content as determined by Shimadzu Corporate gas chromatographs. The object of research – African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) – were grown in UAB ,,Giedrupė“ company. The aim: To examine the growth and quality of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fed with extruded feed and additionally dehydrated fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae. Objectives: To present differently fed African catfish exteriors and the weight and body condition index factors comparative analysis and diagnose the growth and meat quality differences of African catfishand feeding them in two ways - the dehydrated larvae of flies and without them. The main conclusions of this work: It is observed that feeding African catfish with Coppens company extruded feed (85 percent) and dehydrated flies (Hermetia illucens) larvae did not have a significant influence on the exterior as well as the weight. Comparing the two groups test body condition rate was 0.6 percent better. Fish physical and chemical characteristics of the test group is worse than the control group. The larger amount of the most important PUFA fatty acids were detected in the catfish meat control group that were fed with balanced extruded Coppens company feed. Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids ratio was better in fish control group – 4.372: 1 when in searching – 6.195: 1. Recommendations: It is recommended to eat fish products that positively affect human health. It is recommended to grow African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in closed aquaculture systems, because it is not demanding growing conditions, well assimilating feed and fast-growing fish.
