Evaluation of indications for infant hip ultrasound examination: experience of 511 patients.

Aim. To assess incidence of developmental dysplasia of the hip in infants, to evaluate clinical presentation and to compare ultrasound findings and clinical presentation. Objectives. 1. To evaluate incidence of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). 2. To estimate correlation of DDH and gender. 3. To estimate correlation of DDH and age. 4. To investigate time of ossification center appearance. 5. To access clinical presentation of the hip and compare it with US findings. Methods. The study retrospectively included 511 patients who during period of 09/2012-09/2014 per- formed ultrasound (US) examination for DDH in „Ave vita” family clinic. We assessd information of US examination, regarding α an β angles, type according Graf method, information about ossification center and final diagnosis. Analysis of medical records was conducted to evaluate risk factors, infor- mation about clinical examination, previous treatment methods and other radiological exams. Also we evaluated if final diagnosis (according TLK) was mentioned in medical records before US. Conclusions. 1. Incidence of DDH in our sample was: type IIb according Graf 2,3%, type IIa -5,2%, IIc and higher types were absent in our sample. 2. DDH in our sample statisticaly significantly were more common among males. 3. There were no correlation between DDH and age. 4. Ossification center appears in older than one month infants and incidence is higher in every following age group until six months. 5. Clinicaly DDH most commonly presented with assymetrical thigh skin folds and restricted hip abduction. Also with restricted rotation of the hip and hip clicks. There was no correlation between clinical presentation and DDH
