Association between periodontal status and fixed dental prosthesis

SUMMARY Relevance of the problem and aim of the work The fixed partial denture is a common treatment available for the restoration of partially edentulous ridges that can affect periodontal status. Aim of the work – to assess and compare periodontal status between healthy and crowned teeth. Material and the methods The study included patients aged 30-65 years, whose teeth were treated with fixed prostheses. Metal, ceramic, metal ceramic fixed prostheses and healthy teeth were examined. Patients completed questionnaire and were clinically investigated using table made for this study. Dental plaque, periodontal pocket depth, gingival recession and bleeding on probing parameters were assessed. Statistical analysis made using SPSS Statistics 17.0 program. Differences considered statistically significant when standard error was less than 5% (p<0.05). Results 76.4% of all patients’ teeth were covered with plaque. Gingival bleeding was found near 28.8% of all teeth. Plaque amount between groups of healthy, sealed and crowned teeth significantly (p<0.05) did not differ. Gingival bleeding was significantly (p<0.05) greater in fixed prosthesis group, most dental recession cases found in healthy teeth group (p<0.05). Pocket depth was significantly (p<0.05) deeper in fixed prosthesis group 2,73±0,86mm compared with healthy teeth 1,92±0,29mm and sealed teeth 2,21±0,91mm groups. Metal crowns had significantly (p<0.05) less plaque than ceramic and metal ceramic crowns. Gingival bleeding was significantly (p<0.05) greater in metal ceramic crowns group (56.5%).
