The paper describes the experience of one of the authors using open badges with various levels of undergraduates at Southampton Solent University, to encourage non-assessed participation. The practical issues in starting this approach are discussed – including the advantages and disadvantages from the perspective of both the students and of the lecturer. The link with automatic testing and previous non-attendance could be measured. The views of the students and lecturers are discussed and the technical issues are also considered
