This body of research is focused on developing calixarene conjugates targeting i-motif structures and integrin receptors. In Chapter 1, a general background of DNA secondary structures and i-motifs was described, mainly focused on the biological relevance, the experimental techniques and known interacting ligands in i-motif studies. In Chapter 2, a high-throughput i-motif ligand screen method was established, based on fluorescent intercalator displacement. Thiazole orange was used as the fluorescent intercalator in the screen against human telomeric i-motif. Its binding was studied using several spectroscopic techniques.
