The article analyses the common ancient history and remaining cultural closeness of Sweden and Finland and discusses the differences concerning historical consciousness in Sweden and Finland today and common views of contemporary Swedes and Finns on the security policy challenge, which has emerged after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the recent rise of Russia as a regional Great Power
