Lifelong development is largely programmed prenatally. Genetic and epigenetic factors, such as mitochondrial (mt) DNA variation and parent-of-origin effects, significantly contribute to variation in important prenatal phenotypes that determine lifetime development, including placenta and fetal musculoskeletal system.
