Research Doctorate - Doctor of PhilosophyLaboratory scale measurements and theoretical investigations have been made on the ignition and combustion behaviour of pulverized fuel particles. The aims of the experimental study were to: measure the critical (gas or particle) temperatures and energy requirements for the ignition of the pulverized fuel particles; determine the ignition mechanisms; evaluate the combustion reactivity of these fuels; and compare results obtained using various experimental techniques. The objectives of the theoretical study were to develop models for ignition and compare model predictions with experimental results in order to establish possible ignition mechanisms
