In the Polish-speaking territories, the last three decades of the 19th century were a period of fast growth of the publishing market, the birth of the author's profession and the commercialization of literature. The literary field was relatively small but politically deeply divided and held together by numerous personal and institutional relationships. The paper aims to show how these relationships were reflected and shaped by language. The paper draws on an analysis of the correspondences of selected authors and publishers. Particular attention is dedicated to the ways in which authors and publishers negotiated remuneration
