The search for origins in the eighteenth century informed two opposing views in the understanding of architectural origins. In the mid-century, Marc-Antoine Laugier, interpreting the Vitruvian tradition, proposed the idea of the primitive hut as the natural and rational model, conceived as the origin of building to be imitated. A generation later, by the late eighteenth century, and with the development of anti-Vitruvianism, the mimetic theory of the origins of building, which was conceived independent of primitive religions, was challenged. The theory of imitation was substituted by the symbolic interpretation of origins.
