W niniejszym artykule zaprezentowano historię rozwoju idei ochrony konsumenta oraz wpływ tej idei na obecny kształt prawa europejskiego, tak istotnego dla funkcjonowania rynku. Wskazane w artykule postulaty ochrony konsumenta opisano ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem rynku finansowego, a zwłaszcza ubezpieczeniowego. W opracowaniu przedstawiono aktualny problem dotyczący braku spójnej definicji konsumenta w różnych aktach prawnych.
