The oncosuppressor HIPK2 is a kinase involved in the cell fate decisions in the development and response to stress. Recently, it is demonstrated the relevance of this kinase in the control of cytokinesis and prevention of chromosomal instability (CIN). HIPK2 is required for cytokinesis and prevents tetraploidization by phosphorylating the extra-chromosomal histone H2B at the midbody, the organelle-like structure formed at the cleavage furrow between the two daughter cells (Rinaldo et al., 2012).
