THE HUMANIZATION OF HOSPITAL PROCESSES AND CHILDBIRTH HEALTHCARE

No existe consenso en relación al significado de «humanizar» el proceso de parto en un entorno asistencial hospitalario, dada la heterogeneidad de criterios en las referencias publicadas. Sin embargo, el foco de atención apunta a que en ese proceso se incorpore el criterio de la mujer gestante en la toma de decisiones, de entre las opciones posibles, para que el parto transcurra de manera positiva desde su propia perspectiva; sin duda, toda una declaración de intenciones loable y deseable que puede desdibujarse en la práctica diaria debido a la necesaria intersección de las opciones posibles, especialmente, cuando las supuestas opciones deben cumplir criterios de evidencia científica y formar parte de los protocolos establecidos en la institución, así como estar integradas en la filosofía de los profesionales que atienden el trabajo de parto. Se abre un abanico de posibilidades para el cambio de paradigma, todo un reto para alejarnos del modelo biomédico o positivista imperante, en el cual la atención de los profesionales ha estado focalizada en el control biométrico de los parámetros biológicos —desapareciendo la mujer tras el protagonismo de éstos—, e ir adentrándonos en nuevos escenarios más acordes con las filosofías de cuidado.If we consider the diversity of criteria used in scientific works, we will observe that there is no agreement as to what it means to “humanize” childbirth in a hospital environment. However, one of the most salient proposals suggests that the pregnant woman’s perspective must have, always within the available options, an important role in the decision-making process. Undoubtedly, this is a desirable and commendable declaration of intent that might get blurred in the daily practice due to the necessary interdependence of the possible options, especially when the alleged options must abide by criteria of scientific evidence and be part of the established protocols of the institution, as well as of the ethics of those professionals that assist the process of childbirth. There is a myriad of available options that advocate for a change of paradigm, a true challenge to get away from the predominance of the biomedical or positivist model, in which the role of the professionals has been centered upon the biometrical control of biological parameters —thus undermining women’s importance—, and to enter scenarios more consistent with the philosophies of healthcare
