The expansion of the visual arts into interdisciplinary methodological innovations is increasingly employed as a part of data analysis as well as a medium to represent data in the research field of sport and exercise. Visual methods can evoke particular kinds of emotional and visceral responses and can offer unique ways of confronting and challenging stereotypes and prevailing ideologies that normalize them. However, debates around what qualifies researchers to conduct arts-based methods can be a barrier and not all researchers are artists or feel confident in their ‘creative’ abilities.
