In this article, the concept of ‘best evidence’ in nursing history research is discussed. It focuses on mental health nursing history and reflects on the nature of the search process that was utilised to identify a topic for exploration and the resulting research questions that arose. The sources that were found are discussed and analysed. Finally, the implications of this are discussed in relation to the nature of historical research
