The purpose of this essay is to explore the general constitutional and political framework in which relationships between organized religion and the British state developed between 1945 and 1990. ... The concerns of the present essay will be focused by concentration on two pivotal areas of controversy: firstly, the position and role of the Church of England as an "Established Church" in connection with the political posititon of other religious groups; and, secondly, the role of religion in connection with national aspirations in the non-English parts of the United Kingdom, in Scotland, Wales and, above all, Northern Ireland
