Thinking Voices is a collection of 30 articles, written specifically for this publication, which examine important issues raised by the practice of oracy and reflect on them from a variety of viewpoints. The articles cover such topics as: how talk develops; the contexts of oracy; how children learn through talk, and the role of the teacher. All are firmly grounded in classroom practice, drawing on the experience of teachers and making extensive use of transcripts of children's talk. Several of the articles are written in response to other articles in the volume in an attempt to mirror, in a written publication, the interactive nature of talk
