This paper reports a study of the nature of children's musical communication when working on a collaborative compositional task. the paper reports the development and use of an innovative system for coding and analysing individual musical ideas and the manner in which these ideas are deveeloped and elaborated through interaction. The results illuminate the ways ib which complex social processes influence both verbal and musical communication. Specifically, this study highlights how relational factors and gender are crucial variables which are influential in the sociomusical system of collaborative composition
