Reviews the origins and development of the earliest of the communities promoted by Owenite followers of the social reformer, Robert Owen (1771-1858), near modern-day Motherwell, Scotland. Attention is devoted to the economic basis of the community in co-operation and equality and to social provisions, such as education and welfare. While Owen's direct participation was limited he saw it as an important test of his ideas for his community plan
