Two definitions of ageism are offered: one narrow and the other broad. The history of the concept is reviewed, and then the contrast between individual and institutionalised ageism discussed. How gerontologists relate to ageism is considered in the context of anti-ageist action. I conclude with recommendations as to how gerontologists might contribute to the continuing struggle against ageism
