This was a paper given at a conference looking at ancient and medieval childhood. It addresses some of the problems inherent in using visual representations as sources of evidence about changing attitudes to childhood in the later Roman empire (especially with the rise of Christianity). It shows that a range of reasons may explain the apparent decline in frequency of depicting children
