This report, commissioned by the Department of Health, looks at the level of applications to study medicine. Using publicly available statistical data the report investigates both past and current application levels and underlying trends. The analysis is particularly timely with the 2001 expansion in medical school places and the NHS need to recruit more doctors. A multiplicity of trends and factors are noted including gender, ethnicity and socio economic factors. In total seventeen possible factors are identified and discussed which might influence the level of applications to medicine. The report presents a literature review, 31 Tables and 20 Figures, as well as full discussion and indications for further research
