A recent case-control study reported a higher odds of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) on ECG among subjects homozygous for the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene deletion (D) polymorphism. We examined the relations of the ACE deletion-insertion (D-I) polymorphism to echocardiographically defined LVH in 2472 subjects from the Framingham Heart Study (mean age 48.7 range 20 to 86). LVH (defined as LVmass/height>102g/m in women and >143glm in men) was present in 15% of the study sample. Logistic regression analyses revealed no relation between the DD genotype and LVH.
