AbstractOne of the major factors that limit the performance of a WDM system is dispersion. Use of Dispersion Compensating Fiber (DCF) is the most common method for dispersion compensation in WDM systems. In this work, the performance of a WDM system at 8Gbps employing different dispersion compensation schemes using DCF (pre compensation, post compensation and symmetrical compensation techniques) are analyzed in terms of BER and Q factor. Analysis of WDM system with NRZ and RZ modulation format is also done. It is found that a WDM system using RZ modulation format and employing symmetrical compensation scheme provides best performance
