Aşık Veysel in Village Institutions and his Contributions to Music Education

AbstractThe literacy level of the existing population of Turkish Republic, which had come out of war, was quite low, and eighty percent of the population lived in villages. In order to provide villages with schools, the project of Village Institutes was put into practice. In the music education, which was one of the compulsory courses in Village Institutes, folk songs and games which students compiled from their own villages were both notated and sang. Aşık Veysel, who was one of the qualified instructors served in Village Institutions and latest great models of the tradition of amorousness, taught students how to play a stringed instrument as a qualified ballad instructor in 18 village institutions throughout the country as from 1941and he compiled and sang folk songs with them.
