Trade unions are often in the news and their activities subject to much critical comment. Many professional people may feel that trade union activities and professional standards are in conflict. This paper argues that professional workers in employment can engage in trade union activity in a way which is compatible with professional standards of behaviour. Furthermore, it is suggested, greater involvement of professional workers in trade unions can be a creative and constructive force for better trade unions and better trade unionism
