The epidermal growth factor receptor has multiple roles in epidermal biology relating to growth, migration, and, as shown recently, survival of keratinocytes. In cultured keratinocytes activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor upregulates expression of Bcl-xL, an anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 homolog.
