AbstractThe primate lentiviruses encode a protein, Nef, which is required for efficient viral replication in their host. Several biological activities of nef identified in vitro may contribute to this requirement in vivo, including receptor modulation and interference with cellular signaling pathways. We show that HIV- and SIV-encoded Nef can enhance virus production within a single viral replication cycle, not only by increasing viral infectivity, as previously reported, but also by acting through the efficiency of viral transcription and of viral release
