AbstractA proof of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities is presented which is brief, elementary, and well motivated; the “easy” proof of whose existence Hardy and Wright had despaired. A multisum generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities is shown to be a simple consequence of this proof
