The thermotropic properties of multilamellar vesicles of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC), dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), and distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC), as a function of the concentration of bilirubin in the range of 0.1 to 1 mol%, were measured. The exact effects of bilirubin depended on the chain length of the polymethylene chains. But the general effects of bilirubin were the same in all systems. At the lowest concentrations tested (0.1 mol bilirubin/100 mol phospholipid (0.1 mol%)), bilirubin broadened and shifted to higher temperatures the main phase transitions of all bilayers.
