Nitric oxide is a gaseous messenger involved in the regulation of several physiologic processes in various cell types, including skin cells. Three different nitric oxide synthases (neuronal nitric oxide synthase, endothelial nitric oxide synthase, inducible nitric oxide synthase) have been identified in human cells. For inducible nitric oxide synthase, an inducibility by cytokines and lipopolysaccharides have been found.
