AbstractThe Miramar palace in San Sebastian, Spain was the location of a small workshop on “Optical properties of complex materials over different length scales” where more than 50 experts in the fields of nano- and micro-photonics, microwave technology, and related areas presented their work in a friendly atmosphere, challenged only by excellent weather and the facilities. The purpose of the workshop was to combine the knowledge on the properties of electromagnetic fields in complex structures (eg photonic crystals) coming from different communities that exploit similar physical phenomena over different length scales, from the microwave to the near ultraviolet, yet seldom find the opportunity to share their results
