AbstractA novel approach to geologic CO2 sequestration is the surface dissolution method. Effective implementation of this concept requires design calculations using applicable values of the mass transfer coefficient for CO2 into brine.Original experimental data on the rate of dissolution of CO2 into Na-Ca-Cl brines across a range of temperatures and wet CO2 densities are presented. The pressure decline with respect to time in a closed two-phase system was converted into a dissolved concentration history, from which the mass transfer coefficient was computed with a simple one-dimensional transport model. The results are applicable to a broad range of expected brine sources and target aquifers. Transport calculations based on the measured mas...
