AbstractHeavy section Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) usually requires special edge preparation and several passes. One alternative for increased performance is Laser Arc Hybrid Welding (LAHW). For very thick sheets however, imperfections like root drops or solidification cracks can occur. In this study, other techniques are also studied, including multi-pass filling of deep gaps with wire deposition. A laser is then used to melt the filler and base material. The hot- and cold wire laser welding processes are highly sensitive to wire-laser positioning, where controlled melting of the wire is essential.
