AbstractA knowledge of the reserve strength of plates will result in more economical designs, practical load capacity limits, and retrofit decisions that increase the strength of a structure. However, plates do not readily lend themselves to an elasto-plastic solution. One plate model, the grid framework, is the exception. The grid framework finite element models a plate through the use of grid members with a proven elasto-plastic analytical capability. The finite element mechanics of the grid-framework model are outlined with emphasis on the derivation process to generate the equivalent properties that force the grid-framework to conform to plate behavior.
