Parathyroid-independent change in renal handling of phosphate in hyperthyroid rats. Patients with hyperthyroidism have a plasma concentration and a tubular reabsorption of inorganic phosphate that is higher than that found in normal subjects. These alterations found in hyperthyroidism have been attributed to reduced parathyroid activity, which may result from the moderate rise in plasma calcium.
