AbstractThe study aims to highlight the role of education, especially higher education, in the Romanian labour market between 2000 and 2010. The results confirm that a better-educated population, with a qualification meeting the needs of the labour market, is characterized by higher employment rates and lower unemployment rates respectively. Moreover, the results underline that, at the level of the EU countries, gaps in the level of employment and labour productivity can be explained by disparities in the level of education of the human resource, the fact that education is a premise for the qualitative and quantitative employment growth is confirmed
