AbstractApplied research and development, although critical to our future, cannot be successful without an accompanying quest for fundamental knowledge, i.e., basic research. Using their broad base of technologies, the Japanese are working to create new ideas and products. They firmly believe that the achievement of these relies on a firm foundation in R&D.
