There is accumulating evidence from in vitro studies suggesting that the genes of endothelin-1, PDGF, and VEGF are, like the erythropoietin gene, regulated by oxygen tension and by divalent cations. Hypoxia-induced stimulation of, such as endothelin-1, PDGF or VEGF might be involved in the pathogenesis of acute or chronic renal failure, and in renal “inflammatory” diseases (glomerulonephritis, vasculitis, allograft rejection).
