AbstractMulti-enzyme systems such as those involved in the biosynthesis of polyketides, typically catalyze several distinct reactions that are combined in different ways to generate diverse natural products. The variability available in such systems has not been fully harnessed from nature. It may therefore be possible to create ‘unnatural’ natural products, which may be as structurally diverse and medicinally valuable as existing natural products, using combinatorial biosynthesis
