AbstractHowland has used the matrix sign function to separate the eigenvalues of a given matrix. The derived method required complex arithmetic even in the case of real matrices. A modification of the method is presented that does not suffer from this drawback. Moreover it is shown that the problem may be decomposed into smaller subproblems, which leads to considerable savings in computational work
