AbstractThe study investigated the impact of a mother tongue on the learning abilities of pre-school children in one of the states in Nigeria, the nation of over 200 ethnic groups and more than 400 native languages. A quasi-experimental design was adopted. The results showed a significant difference in the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups. The study concluded that using a mother tongue in early childhood classroom was effective in fostering children's learning abilities
