AbstractThere has recently been a surge of new laser-based techniques for generating intense, few-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses, thus opening new applications, such as studying the nonlinear optical properties of various materials at THz frequencies. Simultaneously, innovative solutions for broadband THz detection were found, allowing one to sense matter in the THz range with high temporal resolution. In this paper, we will review the properties and characteristics of recently developed intense THz sources, with a particular eye on their potential applications, such as ultrafast THz nonlinear spectroscopy
