The fluorescent acyl chain analogues cis- and trans-parinaric acid were used to determine the rate and extent of the angular motion of acyl chains in liquid crystalline (39 degrees C) dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine bilayers free of coat protein or containing the coat protein at a protein:lipid ratio of 1:30.
