AbstractIn this paper, the conditions for generating cumulative second harmonics of shear horizontal guided waves are provided. The partial wave technique and normal modal analysis method are used to analyze the second harmonic field. Measurements of the accumulative growth of normalized second harmonic amplitudes of the shear horizontal guided modes by using wedge transducers are presented. The experimental results have a good agreement with the theoretical prediction and thus show that the use of these plate modes is favorable to detect material nonlinearity due to damage mechanism
