AbstractAlready a world power in contract electronic production, Taiwan has since developed local manufacturing of components, first in silicon and then compounds. Contract packaging of LEDs has led to chip manufacturing and then epi-wafer processing. Now foundry is taking off for lasers, VCSELs and GaAs RF ICs, together with a government-led initiative to develop domestic wireless IC for local cell-phone manufacturing
