It is suggested that in portraying Jesus as being rude or angry in connection with exorcisms and healings the Gospels may be historically accurate. It is indicated by comparative evidence that for an exorcism to be successful, the exorcist was expected to be emotionally involved. This need not mean that the exorcist believed malevolent agents were always involved in the maladies addressed. While Matthew and Luke downplay Jesus’ strong emotions in these accounts, such depictions serve to make the picture of Jesus as a prophet like Elisha clearer in the Gospel of Mark
