This paper focuses on the latest developments in the European eco-innovation scheme for reducing CO2 emissions from vehicles. In order to meet manufacturers’ specific CO2 emissions targets, Regulation (EC) No 443/2009 and Regulation (EU) No 520/2011 provide the opportunity for automotive manufacturers to take into account CO2 savings from innovative technologies, “eco-innovations”, which cannot demonstrate their CO2-reducing effects under the test procedure used for vehicle type approval. The process of approval of applications for eco-innovations is illustrated and some relevant examples are given.
